Students, faculty defend DEI at Texas colleges as lawmakers consider banning such efforts

Angela Valenzuela, a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin, was among dozens who waited nearly 12 hours at the Capitol on Thursday for a chance to testify against a bill that would dismantle many DEI programs at state universities and schools.

More than 70 people registered to testify, but only about 40 waited until 8:20 p.m. when the hearing started. The debate hearing was delayed after a marathon debate on school choice. Only one person in the public comments portion testified in favor of the bill.
