Roaming Rome: A Whirlwind Adventure Through Italy’s Timeless Capital

Picture this: cobblestone streets echoing with the whispers of ancient history, the scent of freshly baked pizza mingling with the fragrance of centuries-old architecture peaking out from around every corner. That’s Rome, a city where history meets modern life in the most delightful ways. Join me as I share my lighthearted adventure through Italy’s timeless capital, from exploring iconic landmarks to trying a cappuccino in Europe for the firs time and, of course, indulging in plenty of delicious Italian cuisine along the way.

Rome was my second weekend trip since being in Milan. It was perfect timing because my friend from back home, Aaliyah, was student-teaching there, too, so she was my personal tour guide. When I touched down in Rome, Aaliyah took me right to Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica located within it.

Entering St. Peter’s Basilica is like stepping into a world of grandeur and history. The vast interior, adorned with intricate decorations and natural light, immediately captures your attention. As I moved through the space, I was surrounded by awe-inspiring works of art, from Michelangelo’s Pieta to Bernini’s towering Baldacchino. It’s a place where centuries of faith and creativity converge, inviting contemplation and reflection amidst its stunning beauty. And that was how I ended my first night in Rome!

The following morning we went to MAE Café, Vin et Cuisine for breakfast, and there they served a wide variety of breakfast options from fluffy pancakes to pastries—you name it! I ordered a uova alla benedict con salmone affumiciato e marinato in casa e avocado, which translates to benedict eggs with homemade smoked and marinated salmon and avocado on a sesame bagel. The first bite I took into the bagel was absolute heaven, an explosion of flavors I wasn’t used to but loved on my taste buds.

Sitting at the cozy café in Rome, I decided to try a cappuccino for the first time! As I took that initial sip, the creamy foam melted into the rich espresso, creating a delightful blend of flavors. I did pour three small packets of sugar into it—but that’s beside the point. It was a simple pleasure, but one that instantly made me feel like I was experiencing a true taste of European culture!

The first stop on our itinerary was to visit some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. First were the Spanish Steps. As I climbed the Spanish Steps for the first time, I couldn’t help but be amazed. The sweeping staircase seemed to stretch endlessly upwards, adorned with vibrant flowers. At each level, people lounged and took pictures, taking in the lively atmosphere and picturesque views of Rome below. As I reached the top, I paused to catch my breath and soak in the beauty of the iconic Piazza di Spagna. It was a moment of awe and wonder, one that I knew would stay with me long after as I walked down to the colorful streets below.

Now approaching the Trevi Fountain, I could hardly contain my excitement. The sound of rushing water grew louder with every step I took closer to the fountain, and on the last step I took forward, there was a magnificent masterpiece of Baroque art, bathed in golden sunlight. The sculpted figures seemed to dance in the water, while the stunning backdrop of Palazzo Poli added to the fountain’s enchanting allure. For a moment, I felt as though I had stepped into a dream, utterly captivated by the beauty of this iconic Roman landmark. It was a moment I knew I would treasure forever!

As we made our way toward the Colosseum, I noticed a Nomination Italy store to my right. Excitement bubbled within me because of the unique concept behind their bracelets: for each country or city you visit, you can swap out a link for a symbol or flag representing that place. I saw it as the perfect souvenir to commemorate my study abroad journey. With every new city or country I explore, I’ll collect a charm to add to my bracelet. So far, my collection includes the Italian flag and a miniature Colosseum—fittingly, my next destination.

As I walked up the hill towards the Colosseum, my heart raced with anticipation. With each step, the iconic structure loomed larger, its ancient arches rising proudly against the backdrop of the Roman sky. As I reached the top of the hill and caught my first full glimpse of the Colosseum, I was speechless. Standing there, amazed by its immense size, I couldn’t help but think of all the people who had once filled its mighty walls. It was a moment of realization, a vivid encounter with history that left me humbled by the wonders of the ancient world.

As the weekend drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey my friend and I had shared in the eternal city of Rome. From wandering the ancient streets to marveling at iconic landmarks, every moment has been filled with laughter, discovery, and a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of history and culture that permeates this remarkable city. Until next time, Rome. Arrivederci!
