U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has announced $175 million in Internet access funding for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), UPI reported.U.S. Vice President Kamala HarrisU.S. Vice President Kamala Harris

Affordable, high-speed internet is an essential part of modern life, Harris said Monday at Benedict College.

The funding comes through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve internet access at 61 HBCUs – Benedict will get almost $3 million.

"Everyday in communities across our nation, students who have affordable access use the Internet to do their homework,” Harris said. “Parents use the Internet to order groceries. Seniors use the Internet to see a doctor without having to leave home. And small-business owners use the Internet to buy inventory, to manage the payroll, even to run their cash register."

More than 24 million American households do not have internet access due to price or unavailability in the area, Harris said.

"I have heard so many stories about what it means when folks don't have Internet. Students who have to sit in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant just to be able to submit their homework on public Wi-Fi," Harris said,

The Biden-Harris administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has $65 billion to put high-speed Internet in every home. And the plan is already adding jobs, such as for electric workers and technicians, Harris said.

Harris also applauded Rep. Jim Clyburn D-SC for writing the Accessible, Affordable Internet for All Act to help connect all U.S. households with affordable and accessible high-speed internet.
