Why One PUC Student Switched from Nursing to Strategic Communication

When Shannea Minell Santiago was younger, she wanted to be a nurse, which is why she initially chose to attend PUC. That quickly changed halfway through her first year of college. Now, in the middle of her junior year, she’s been majoring in strategic communication. Despite the shift, Shannea is glad she picked PUC because the campus experience is unique – small and intimate, creating a special atmosphere.

Why did you choose the Communication program?

Making the switch from Pre-Nursing, I had a tough choice between Communication and Psychology. Eventually, I went with Communication because I’m always telling my friends and family about the importance of communication in our daily lives. What drew me in was the versatility of skills for different industries, which was perfect because I wasn’t quite sure where I was headed at the time. All I knew was that I enjoyed writing and talking as I am a people person. The final push that I like to joke around that convinced me is how there is little to no math involved in this program 🙂

What do you like the most about the program?

What I love most about the program is the incredibly friendly and approachable professors. They’re always ready to help and accommodate their students, going beyond academics. Whether lending an ear for our problems or just chatting about life in general, their support makes the learning environment even better.

How has attending PUC been beneficial to your education and future?

Attending PUC has significantly benefited my education and future. Opportunities such as being a marketing intern at the admissions department and working as a student assistant in the communication department have pushed me out of my comfort zone, resulting in substantial personal growth. PUC stands out because landing positions like these would have been challenging elsewhere, making my experience here truly valuable for my development.

What are some valuable things you’ve learned from your program?

In my program, I’ve gained valuable insights into efficient communication, benefiting my personal and professional relationships. I’ve learned that communication is vital in all aspects of life, equipping me to manage media, shape public perception, and navigate communication challenges effectively. These lessons have significantly improved my communication skills and deepened my understanding of its importance across various life contexts.

What class have you taken that you think everyone would benefit from?

A class that I have taken that I think everyone would benefit from is Interpersonal Communication because it teaches you such important skills in life. Skills that can help someone build healthy relationships and succeed in personal and professional life. It also teaches about one’s own listening and communication styles and how to handle issues in relationships that are bound to happen in one’s life.

Can you give any advice to high school students who are interested in pursuing your major?

While some may consider communication an “easy” major, it involves extensive writing, individual and group projects, creative work, interviews, and public speaking. It is a major that challenges individuals to step outside their comfort zones and grow. It can be tough, but nothing is impossible. Keep pushing through, and you’ll surprise yourself with how much work you have created over the years.

Also, you will know if a major is meant for you if you can grasp the concepts without realizing it. I remember I studied so hard when I was in pre-nursing, and no matter how much I studied, I couldn’t grasp the concepts in the way that I wanted to. Meanwhile, in communication, even when I don’t feel like I get it, I surprise myself with what I know.

Outside of classes, are there any activities or events your program throws during the school year?

The communication program throws a couple of small events throughout the school year. In the past, we did a scavenger hunt where squishmallows were part of the price. We also throw small get-togethers where we get to have Dr. McGuire’s famous cookies. Besides the events, we also run a student-led podcast called “Through the Grapevine”, which is on Spotify. We have a lot of opportunities in this program, and that is why it’s so great 🙂

What is your favorite thing about being in the Pioneers family?

My favorite thing about being in the Pioneers family is the environment that PUC has. There are a lot fewer distractions here, and just how approachable everyone is.
