10 Fall Things Every Hope College Student Should Do

Hope College Network

There’s no particular order, but you should do all of these things at least once during your fall semesters as a Hope student. It’ll be fun. Trust me. 1. Make a leaf pile and jump in it too. See all those beautifully colored, crisp leaves at your feet? Take the opportunity while it’s here–go ahead and take a step back into childhood for a bit. 2.

Choose Your Kingdom

Hope College Network

There’s a kingdom that reigns in each one of us. A kingdom that was built to be explored. I’ve been praying a lot lately. Praying that my career and life and all that is ahead would somehow fall into place before my eyes. But I know life doesn’t work that way. So I celebrate the little victories and mourn in the little disappointments.

The Sabbath

Hope College Network

Sundays at Hope rock. For me specifically, this past Sunday was extraordinary. My Sunday’s start off around 10 a.m., which is when I lazily roll out of bed to get ready for church. Two of the seniors on the soccer team then swing by my dorm around 10:50 and we go to Engedi Church together. I absolutely love Engedi, and every Sunday I feel very refreshed after the service.

Hope Coll in the Fall

Hope College Network

You guys, there are few things I love more than fall at Hope. The sunsets are ridiculous. The trees are so beautiful that I actually get sad when the leaves fall off of them. Temperatures, while often unpredictable, are generally pretty nice. And the apples. Oh, the apples. I’m an apples and peanut butter kind of gal, so when those big Michigan apples start coming in, I am a very happy camper.

Step 3: Magnificent Mile, Chicago It was refreshing to be back in a city filled with tall buildings packed tightly together, traffic noises, chain restaurants, and all kinds of people. Many of the West Coast students’ attention tunnel-visioned onto the nearest Starbucks. They dropped us off a little ways away from the Bean , a huge silver bean sculpture at the center of Millennium Park.

VanderProv – Hope’s Student Improv Group

Hope College Network

I’m finally taking the time to write about one of my favorite groups here on Hope’s campus: VanderProv. VanderProv is Hope’s only student improv group. They perform about once a month in the DeWitt Theatre. Unless I’m really sick or I have a prior engagement, I’m always in the audience. If you’re unsure about what improv groups are, they take theatrical and comedic games and use the audience to create quite interesting situations.

The walls were so completely covered with portraits of black men and women that only small slivers of pink wallpaper were peeking from beneath.

How to Survive Midterms

Hope College Network

Midterms are in full swing at Hope this week, and they’ve made this week really, really busy. Not only does it seem like every professor makes 58 extra things due this week, but half-semester classes end with big exams, new half-semester classes start with unfamiliar professors and workloads, seniors are taking the GRE and applying to grad schools, applications for committees and programs are due, and everything else that could possibly be stressful is happening as well, plus the rest of l

Midterm Thoughts

Hope College Network

It’s the Sunday night before midterm week. No one feels like getting anything done, but papers are due tomorrow and exams are looming ahead and pre-labs and readings and writing workshops—all the usual work—are piled up on the floor next to where you’re watching your hall mate slide down the stairs penguin style. Others join in, you add some pillows, laugh until your abs hurt almost as much as if you were the one sliding down the stairs and then back to your text books.

#JustPhelpsScholarsThings: The Chicago Trip, Part 1

Every year the Phelps Scholars go on the Chicago Trip, a day-long event that is meant to give students a little taste of Chicago culture and a little break from college. All that’s required is to sign up, dress up, and hop on the bus. It’s about a two-hour trip from Scott Hall to our first stop: Trinity United Church of Christ, a church that takes pride in their African-American heritage.

Two weeks ago, I went to Chicago with a couple of my friends. I have not been to Chicago before, so I did not know what to expect. I have visited cities like Los Angeles, Denver, New York, San Francisco, Boston and Minneapolis, so I was preparing myself for a “typical” American city. I was totally wrong. Chicago has its own culture, uniqueness, and style, compared to rest of the big cities in the United States.

Off-Campus Homework

Hope College Network

At first, the times I am off-campus sound like the worst times to do homework. Times off-campus should be spent exploring or having fun or drinking really good coffee, I tell myself. However, throughout the past year, I have found that sometimes getting off-campus is just what I need to get motivated to get my schoolwork done. A change of scenery is always good, and sometimes when it’s nice outside, that change even involves being outdoors.

What To Do When You Experience Writer’s Block

Most club activities are called off, the Phelps Dining hours are cut short, and most students are huddled in their dorm finishing up Fall Break homework (supposedly). Although these four days are a bit lonely for dorms or cottages that are a bit emptier than others, it is great to to able to wind down and have a whole campus to yourself.
