Six Videos To Use During Residence Life Professional Staff Training (With Bonus Curriculum Videos!)

I provide a number of training and consulting services for professionals in college housing and residence life. In the course of developing materials for these services, we’ve identified a number of high quality videos that address topics related to higher education and student learning. The following are some of our favorites that make excellent conversation starters for any professional staff training you may be conducting. The first set of videos below address larger macro-issues, while the bonus set of videos at the end come from ACPA Video on Demand and address residential curriculum more specifically. These videos can be used for “homework” or clipped for in-training multimedia.

Ken Robinson on Flourishing (The RSA)

“Finding one’s passion and true purpose in life is essential to human flourishing. In this new RSA Shorts video, Sir Ken Robinson argues that education, organisations and communities need to be built on a model of diversity rather than conformity, so that every individual is able to discover and develop their unique talents and abilities.”

3 Rules to Spark Learning (Ramsey Musallam, TED)

“It took a life-threatening condition to jolt chemistry teacher Ramsey Musallam out of ten years of “pseudo-teaching” to understand the true role of the educator: to cultivate curiosity. In a fun and personal talk, Musallam gives 3 rules to spark imagination and learning, and get students excited about how the world works.”

Liz Coleman’s call to reinvent liberal arts education (TED)

“Bennington president Liz Coleman delivers a call-to-arms for radical reform in higher education. Bucking the trend to push students toward increasingly narrow areas of study, she proposes a truly cross-disciplinary education — one that dynamically combines all areas of study to address the great problems of our day.”

Digital Transformation: Are you ready for exponential change? (Gerd Leonhard)

“Business as usual is dead. Increasingly, science fiction is becoming science fact. Exponential technologies are rapidly changing our lives and societies, every day, everywhere. We will need different skills, and we will need to get much better at driving change – or we will be driven by it. Most importantly, we should embrace technology but not become it. Anything that can be digitized or automated, will be – and anything that cannot be digitized or automated will become extremely valuable. Lastly, we must go beyond technology to define real human values in this new digital ecosystem.”

DIY U (Anya Kamenetz, TEDx)

“With knowledge changing more rapidly than ever, author Anya Kamenetz addresses the growing gap between what students learn in and outside the classroom. Kamenetz talks about how innovations are enabling personal learning networks that augment — or trump — traditional learning.”

Bring on the Learning Revolution! (Sir Ken Robinson, TED)

“In this poignant, funny follow-up to his fabled 2006 talk, Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for a radical shift from standardized schools to personalized learning — creating conditions where kids’ natural talents can flourish.”

Using Rubrics to Assess Learning
Rubrics are tools that are used by educators to help evaluate the learning and performance of students. They are written documents, often presented in a chart format, that help define progress and achievement levels towards various goals and performance indicators.
