Team Growth: Get to Know Kathryn and David

At CampusGroups (CG) our team is our biggest strength. We believe in the importance of bringing people together to activate our collective potential. Our outlook is global, with teams in the US, Canada, France, the Middle East, and India.

We trust in the strength that a diverse team brings. This vision is reflected in how we:

  • Develop our product.

  • Work with clients.

  • Build our team.

Our belief is that by embracing diversity, we can foster a better world for our team, partner campuses and students. In this endeavor, we are consistently growing as a company. In 2021 we welcomed 17 unique professionals to the CG team.

This post introduces Kathryn Warren and David South. Below, Kathryn and David tell us about their professional background, what brought them to CG, and what makes them tick.

Kathryn Warren

Kathryn joined CG as a Campus Success Associate. Living in Rochester, New York, she holds a Master of Education from Ohio University.

Kathryn loves supporting students throughout their higher education experience. She has held several roles in this space. Prior to joining CG, she served as Assistant Director for First Year Experience Programs (State University of New York College at Brockport).

Like many team members, Kathryn loves to travel. She also loves all outdoor activities. Kayaking in the Finger Lakes is her absolute favorite summer activity!

David South

David is our Product Support Manager. Based out of Los Angeles, California, he holds a master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Strayer University.

David has over ten years working in the higher education space. Prior to joining CG, he held several roles including System Specialist and Application Administrator roles at different institutions, including Mount Saint Mary’s University, University of Rochester, and Western University of Health Sciences.

David is an avid gamer (think board games, video games, role-playing). He also loves hiking and hitting the climbing wall.

  1. Tell us about your professional background. What does your unique experience bring to the team and company?

    Kathryn:

Prior to joining CG, I earned my master’s degree in Higher Education from Ohio University. During this time, I also worked full-time in the field supporting students through academic advising, orientation, and first-year experience programs.

I’m very excited to be bringing my experience and passion for student success to CampusGroups! I look forward to helping campus communities connect, engage, and support their students inside and outside of the classroom.

    David:

In addition to EdTech and Higher Education, I’ve worked in a wide variety of industries! Landscaping, Hospitality, Retail, Logistics, Warehousing, Law - I’ve been fortunate to see how different industries tackle similar challenges, how they adapt to new technologies, and what makes them tick.

I’ve also held various technical roles within these industries. This has given me a colorful perspective of technology and those who use it. I like to think I bring a sense of “let’s try it again!” to the Support Team and the company. Just because something was not successful the first time, doesn’t mean it won’t be again. Sometimes changing up some of the details makes all the difference.

  2. Tell us a fun and surprising fact about yourself!

    Kathryn:

Right before the pandemic, I was able to road trip through Ireland! I’m so grateful for that experience and can’t wait to travel internationally again soon.

    David:

I used to be a Faire camper! When the Renaissance Faire was in town, I would often spend time camping on site with the talent. I would help around the faire on occasion, and basically got to be a real-life adventurer for a month and a half, on weekends that is.

  3. What made you decide to join CampusGroups (CG)?

    Kathryn:

I decided to join CG because of the opportunity to advance my knowledge in EdTech while actively using my higher education skills and experiences. CG is the perfect blend of my professional interests! I also love being able to work with amazing and talented colleagues from all around the world.

    David:

The passion this company has for its product and clients. I first met Yorick, the company Founder and CEO, at the end of 2018 when the University I was working for at the time was looking to migrate to CG from another product.

The way Yorick spoke about the system, the team, and their processes was pure enthusiasm and very much shows in our end-product. I knew I was joining a company that loves what it does, and that makes for an amazing environment with excellent people.

  4. What is it in this new adventure that drives/excites you?

    Kathryn:

I am most excited about the opportunity to expand my reach and help so many students and campus communities. The impact that CG has on the college experience is incredible!

    David:

The excitement of our clients is one of the biggest drivers for me. When we continue to advance features or get to show off something our developers have built, it is just the best feeling! I love knowing that we are helping colleges provide the best experience for their communities.

  5. What is the app or software you can’t live without?

    Kathryn:

Spotify! I don’t think I’ve gone a day without using Spotify for music or podcasts since I downloaded it. My favorite feature is the Discover Weekly playlist which is constantly introducing me to new songs and artists.

    David:

Probably Discord! I do so many things with it, it is weird to think what my life would be like if it just disappeared.

  6. What do you like to do outside of work?

    Kathryn:

I enjoy any outdoor activity - biking, camping, hiking, and the list could go on! I especially love kayaking in the Finger Lakes. It’s my favorite summertime activity!

    David:

I possibly play too many games if that is such a thing. Board games, video games, you name it I play it. I am also an avid role-player and game master. When I’m not playing indoor games, I try and hit the beach once a month and go hiking every other week. I look forward to going to theme parks and indoor climbing again someday.

We are grateful for the expertise, hard work and positive attitudes that Kathryn and David bring to our team. In the coming weeks we will be introducing more of our wonderful and unique colleagues. Please stay tuned.
