Starting Salaries for Bachelor’s Degrees in Traditionally Higher-Paying Disciplines Leveling Off

Starting salaries for college graduates with bachelor’s degrees in traditionally higher-paying disciplines are leveling off, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).Nace Graph

Employers that responded to NACE’s Winter 2023 Salary Survey are expecting to pay Class of 2023 graduates with bachelor’s degrees in engineering ($74,405) and math and sciences ($67,199) average salaries just 0.7% higher than projected last year.

The average starting salary for bachelor’s degree graduates in computer science is expected to decrease by 4.0% from last year. But despite this drop, among the fields surveyed, computer science graduates – they remain in high demand from other industries – are projected to have the second highest average salary offer ($72,843) after engineering graduates.

“The drop in starting salary for computer science majors is likely the result of recent recalibration among tech companies, which have traditionally offered top dollar,” said NACE Executive Director Shawn VanDerziel.

“In terms of starting salary, this effectively puts these graduates back where their Class of 2021 counterparts were,” VanDerziel said.

Meanwhile, fields such as business (2.3%), agriculture and natural resources (2.6%), communications (4.8%), and humanities (4.5%) are expected to see rising average starting salaries.
