College Possible coaches gain transferable leadership skills with ServeMinnesota

Started in 2007 by ServeMinnesota, the InterCorps Council of Minnesota (ICC) aims to promote engagement, communication, collaboration, and education to empower AmeriCorps members in Minnesota. ICC is made up of current AmeriCorps members from many different service organizations across the state of Minnesota, including nonprofits focused on education and housing access, literacy initiatives, environmental protection, and counseling resources for substance use disorders.

Joining ICC is a great leadership opportunity for AmeriCorps members; it provides experience in event planning, research and implementation practices, and networking opportunities with fellow Minnesota AmeriCorps service members. In addition to being a general council member, members can apply for the ICC Facilitator Team. This team, supported by ServeMinnesota, helps shape and execute ICC’s goals.

According to Landry Forrest, now well into her second year serving as a College Possible AmeriCorps coach and a member of the ICC Facilitator Team, “you really get to know the people you serving at other education nonprofits. However, it can sometimes be difficult to learn about the ways other AmeriCorps programs are making an impact outside of your own work.” ICC gives AmeriCorps members an opportunity to connect and network with others across the state of Minnesota who share similar interests and values while participating in fun and informational events.

The ICC Facilitator Team recently hosted a table at the 2024 AmeriCorps Opportunity Fair at the University of Minnesota. Attendees included prospective, current, and former AmeriCorps service members who made friendship bracelets while learning about the ICC and how they can get involved. In addition to opportunity fairs, ICC has some exciting networking and panel opportunities coming up. In May, ICC will be hosting an AmeriCorps alumni panel featuring some College Possible AmeriCorps alumni, as well as a “Life After AmeriCorps” event where members will learn how to leverage their service experience while looking for jobs at the end of their service term.
