PUC’s Biology Club: Exposing People to the Wonders of Biology

The Biology Club at PUC is all about exposing people to the wonders of biology and doing so in a way that is fun and appealing to all. Some of their events are not even biology-related but offer ways for members to take time off from their rigorous studies and have fun with fellow members. Contrary to many people’s beliefs, you do not have to be a biology major or even a science major to join the Biology Club. You can just have a mild interest in biology or want to join a club to have the opportunity to socialize and have fun with your peers. The club’s mission is to bring students together to experience the biology department’s relaxed atmosphere and what it is like to be a part of an active club that cares for its members.

Senior Christian Nunez is the Biology Club president this year. As president, he oversees the creation of all events and ensures that everything runs smoothly. Christian delegates tasks to his fellow officers but also takes it upon himself to make sure each event is set up properly and to be present. He finds that his most important task is the preparation of each event. It can be a lot of work getting all the materials together, planning times and dates that work for everyone, and ensuring that the word gets out for club events.

What made you want to be involved with the club?

What made me want to be involved was simply that I was a biology major. I remember joining the Bio Club as soon as I could because it was the club for the department with all the people I knew best. However, I became an officer pretty abruptly and was nervous to have an important role. I quickly realized that all the officers exist to help each other, and we all pitch in to make the club successful. This inspired me to keep up that feeling with my officers now and to do my best to shoulder the responsibilities of the club.

What events does the club host throughout the year? Do you have a favorite event?

We usually have a lot of different events throughout the year, and each year can be different. They range from game nights, movies, pot decorations, pumpkin carving, and more. However, our most popular events are the night hikes, the annual Albion trip, and the end-of-the-year water balloon fight!

My favorite is the Albion trip. I have amazing memories from each year I have gone, and I always look forward to going back every year. It feels like camping with your friends, and it’s always a great opportunity to get away from student life for a little bit and enjoy the Albion environment.

What are the benefits of being a part of PUC’s Biology Club?

One of the main benefits is being a part of a super active club you will consistently see events. I fear that a lot of the other clubs people join very rarely hold events, and to me, the point of a club is to at least meet with all your fellow members. If one joins the Bio Club, one can expect super fun events to happen that can appeal to everyone. Everything is also always free, and we make sure we provide everything one would need for our events. All you have to do is bring yourself and your friends along. For that Albion trip, if you’re a member of the club, you get to go on that trip for free! I think that alone is well worth joining for, not even considering the other great stuff we do.

How can non-biology students get involved with the club?

Very simply, actually. All they have to do is join! Whenever Club Rush happens at the beginning of the year, I highly encourage any student, no matter their major, to come to the biology table and sign up. It’s open to all.

What is your favorite thing about the Biology Club?

My favorite thing about Bio Club is the people in it and the atmosphere of events. It always feels so relaxed and just like a big hang-out with your friends. I think anybody can relate to enjoying times like this. For me, it’s an extra excuse to spend time with those I am close to and enjoy the perks of being a Bio Club member. I have never been to an event where the people who show up don’t have a good time. It’s always an opportunity for me to make new memories.

How can the PUC community support your club?

The PUC community can support the Bio Club by simply becoming a part of it. If you know an event is coming up, be sure to show up and experience it for yourself. We put a lot of hard work into ensuring we hold some of the best events. The best way to show support is to show your appreciation and interest by coming to them.
