These schools have the best student-faculty ratios in the country

Among 1,222 accredited colleges and universities that submitted to US News' annual survey, these 16 schools came out on top.

U.S. News recently released its rankings stacking the best schools’ student-faculty ratios, culminating from 1,222 ranked schools’ fall 2022 data. This ranking features the top 16 schools, which had no more than 6 students per teacher on average.

When applying for schools, many parents and students look into how personalized a college’s undergraduates can expect their instruction to be from their teachers. Student-faculty ratios contribute to 1% of the formula U.S. News uses when creating its Best College Rankings. It is no coincidence, then, that nine of the 16 schools on this list are featured in U.S. News’ top 10 national universities.

Caltech and MIT tied for first place at a 3:1 ratio, but the latter had 3,651 more undergraduate students enrolled. They are seven spots higher on the college ranking after all. Of the six highest-ranked schools by student-faculty ratio, all but Principia College in Illinois featured in the best college ranking’s top 10. The remaining schools tied at 6:1, but Northwestern University in Illinois deserves recognition for having the most undergraduates enrolled (8,494) on this list while still showing up in the top 16.
