Diverse: Issues In Higher Education Magazine Profiles Top “40 and Under” Scholars

FAIRFAX, VA — Diverse: Issues In Higher Education will kick off 2023 with its annual Emerging Scholars edition.

The Jan. 19, 2023 edition will profile 15 “40 and Under” scholars throughout the country who are making their mark in the academy through teaching, research, and service. These outstanding scholars represent the future of academia and serve as an inspiration to students and faculty members.

The 2023 Emerging Scholars of the Year are:

  • Dr. Sharrelle Barber, assistant professor, Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University
  • Dr. Gerald Carter, assistant professor, Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology (EEOB), The Ohio State University
  • Dr. Nathaniel Currie, assistant professor, Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work, Clark Atlanta Universit
  • Dr. Ja'Bette Lozupone, director of student affairs, Montgomery College
  • Dr. Darris R. Means, associate professor of higher education, University of Pittsburgh
  • Dr. Adelle Dora Monteblanco, assistant professor of public health, Pacific University
  • Dr. Erika Moore, assistant professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida
  • Dr. Miao Qian, assistant professor of psychology, University of Detroit Mercy
  • Dr. Alex Red Corn, assistant professor of educational leadership, Kansas State University
  • Dr. Natalia Rodriguez, assistant professor, Department of Public Health, Purdue University
  • Dr. Lesley Shawler, assistant professor of behavior analysis and therapy, Southern Illinois University
  • Dr. Everrett A. Smith, associate professor of higher education & program coordinator, School of Education, University of Cincinnati
  • Dr. Mai See Thao, director of Hmong Studies and assistant professor, Department of Anthropology, Global Religions, and Cultures, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
  • Dr. Hiram H. López Valdez, assistant professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Cleveland State University
  • Dr. Diego Villada, assistant professor of theatre and performance studies, Humanities Division, New College of Florida

About Emerging Scholars:

Diverse, then Black Issues In Higher Education, first published its “Emerging Scholars” edition in 2001. It has remained one of the magazine’s most popular editions since its inception. Diverse editors select honorees from a pool of candidates recommended by various scholars, department chairs, university public information officers, and others.

Each scholar is selected based on research, educational background, publishing record, teaching record, competitiveness in field of study, and uniqueness of field of study. Each leader selected has demonstrated perseverance and tenacity, and each has made a broad impact on the academy.

The Jan. 19, 2023 edition announcing the Emerging Scholars of the Year will be released to Diverse paid subscribers on Jan. 13, 2023. We request that news organizations and higher education media outlets do not report this story until that date.
