A man who set himself ablaze on the University of California, Berkeley, campus last week received aid from bystanders who sustained minor burns, the news site Berkeleyside reported.

The Berkeleyside report described fire officials as saying the man had second- and third-degree burns and was taken to an Oakland hospital Wednesday afternoon.

A sandwich shop manager was among those rushing to douse the flames, Berkeleyside reported. Short videos from the scene shared on social media showed at least three people using clothing to try to beat out the flames while the man on fire stayed on his feet, walking partially across Bancroft Way before doubling back toward the university’s Sproul Plaza area.

A university spokesman Friday said no new information was available about the identity of the man.
