New report reveals the highest-paid U.S. private college presidents

A new report details the 2021 pay grades of private university leaders across the country — including three presidents in the Pittsburgh region.

The Chronicle’s report looked at 312 leaders at private colleges with expenditures of $100 million or more. Topping the list was Amy Gutmann, the former president of the University of Pennsylvania, who earned a whopping $22.87 million in 2021.

In the past few decades, salaries for top administrators have skyrocketed, surpassing the rate of inflation, said Richard Vedder, an economist and professor emeritus at Ohio University.
