“Dreams I Never Dared to Dream”: A Study Abroad Revelation

Landon Chamberlain had a burning desire to learn French, so he decided to attend Salève Adventist University this year through Adventist Colleges Abroad. Though he did consider attending ACA in Germany or Austria, his heart knew where it truly wanted to be.

What Inspired you to study abroad?

It’s a mix of many things, really. I’ve always had this fascination with languages, and there’s something truly special about the way conversations flow in French. That, coupled with a few other factors, tipped the scales and pushed me to take the leap into studying abroad.

Describe your typical day there.

The days here kick off at around 6 AM with a bit of prayer and Bible reading, a ritual that sets the tone for the day until about 7:30. Breakfast at the café follows at 7:40, and I wrap it up by 8. After that, it’s off to the dorm to get ready for the day. School starts at 9, and concludes at noon. Post-lunch is a quiet time, reading the Bible in French and English for about an hour. The afternoon is dedicated to working out from 2 to 3:30, followed by homework and personal journaling. Evenings are peppered with activities like volleyball and basketball, and Wednesday nights are reserved for a cozy Bible study – everyone’s invited! Then it’s another hour of quiet time and then bed! I hit the hay around 9, or sometimes even earlier.

What places have you visited and are planning to see?

Ah, the places I’ve been and the ones I dream of visiting! Paris has been a delight, as has Innsbruck in Austria and the charming small towns dotting the French landscape. Geneva is a frequent escape for me. Next on the list are Egypt and Albania in February, followed by Croatia and Serbia, with the UK on my radar sometime in the third quarter.

What have been your favorite things so far about studying abroad?

Studying abroad has been a revelation. Everything, from life’s intricacies to the flavors of different cuisines, the diverse tapestry of people, and the enchanting places – it’s all beyond amazing. Playing volleyball across Europe, and imagine this, skiing in the French Alps for a class – dreams I never dared to dream.

Have you had a favorite meal or dessert?

Speaking of dreams, let me tell you about this Chinese place near the Eiffel Tower – absolute heaven. The ginger tea and noodles were a symphony of flavors. And don’t get me started on the hot chocolate in France – it’s an experience in itself.

What advice do you have for students interested in ACA?

If someone’s pondering the idea of studying abroad, I’d share this perspective: College can wait. Take a breath, take a year. Rushing through life might lead you down a path that isn’t truly yours. Taking time off to see the world, discover new facets of yourself, and forge connections – it’s a journey worth taking. Life’s going to keep moving forward; there’s no need to rush it.
