For me, an international student from Nigeria, building a sense of community was an important aspect of what I set out to do in the U.S., My first year was marked by my significant involvement in Hope’s Phelps Scholars Program, which is a first-year program that helps students develop the tools needed to navigate our multicultural world.

Students will work alongside that scientist if possible, learn about their lives and their research, and then develop a children’s book that highlights the lives and contributions to science and society by the two women. Organize a “storytime” event for students to read their books to a young audience.

Several of my students organized a holiday pie fundraiser at the time when the Syrian refugee crisis was front and center. They not only learned about the Syrian conflict but also how to organize an effective fundraiser. Our students have participated in the Science March, March for Immigration, and Women's March.
