Leaders of Middle Tennessee State University’s campus ministry organization, Campus Outreach, have been indicted for attempting to steal from the university, the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office announced Wednesday.

Three men, Director John Thomas “JT” Farmer, Minister Greg McCall and Austin “Audy” Smothers, a former president of MTSU’s Campus Outreach chapter, are accused of attempting to steal $4,700. The men had planned to travel during a period when, due to COVID-19 restrictions, travel reimbursements were disallowed. Nevertheless, they filed for reimbursement, claiming the funds were to cover the cost of students attending a virtual conference and producing a fake receipt to corroborate the story, investigators said.

The group also allegedly provided false financial information to the university.

Each of the three men faces one count of attempted theft of property over $2,500, one count of forgery, one count of criminal simulation and one count of false entries in a government record.
