To make cooking during school more than an excuse to eat great food, I make the activities experiential. So I have my students do self-directed experimental inquiry based on holiday-themed cooking or recipes. Students develop an awareness of unique differences among people and cultures around the world.

Many winter adaptations are behaviors that take place in the fall in preparation for the upcoming winter climate, such as gathering and storing food for consumption throughout the winter. One of my students did her project on human trafficking. She organized a food and clothing drive for women in the shelter. This student not only gave her time to the cause that she was passionate about, but she was able to raise awareness about the issue at the same time. The outcome makes a direct and tangible impact.

It’s super fun to watch them develop and execute their own businesses, especially when they add a community or solutions-based element to the experience. I have had a lot of students develop businesses, but one that stands out amongst the rest was a skateboard company. They just don't take the trip in the end.
